The Changemaker Way™ is a meticulously designed online course / in person experience to help young people let go of contention and discover a profound connection to themselves, their learning, and the appropriate curriculum to pursue their passion and purpose and contribute positively to society. It's nothing like school.
From the struggle or emotional contention with themselves, possible time and attention available by caregivers, together with anxiety from past traditional educational environments and experiences, or for other reasons, the young person often begins their way on the changemaker journey being shy, lost, anxious, bored, apprehensive, confused or doubting their ability to learn yet have a specific goal (conscious or unconscious) essential to them to be fulfilled, including in the case of neurodiverse learners. We assist students experiencing challenging emotions and deficits in communication, social and life skills to develop skills to confidently integrate as a focused and contributing adult in the community. For this reason, we support parents and caregivers (usually mothers) in identifying appropriate social learning environments for their young person to confidently connect with themselves and be clear on the way forward as they work in a structured yet flexible way. Learning occurs when environments are physically, emotionally (mental health) and identity safe and allows the teen to be themselves unconditionally.
Module one - self-discovery/exploration and questions to promote both imagination and critical thinking, the young person is ignited by clarifying their passion for what to learn and for creating their unique one- and five-year vision. For older teens, the ten-year vision is added. This step has a high potential to uncover and/or confirm a long-term vocation or career.
Module two - teens express their hero’s journey verbally, via illustration, in song, or when possible, in writing a story, play or poem. This teenager shares this experience with their parents in week 8/12 or when appropriate to the teen's journey. A movie documentary entitled ‘We Rise Up’ is viewed and discussed as part of module two.
Module three – in this module, we continue to uphold our commitment to individualised learning. A meaningful action plan is created with the support of continued one-on-one coaching and mentoring, tailored to the unique needs of each student. This encourages and allows the student to take the initiative for ownership as it determines the ‘how’ their learning proceeds using their plan. This is the module where the integration of all other learning recommendations from distance education schools, learning centre mentors and medical practitioners are included. At this process step, self-directed, self-motivation and self-organisation goals are further scaffolded and embraced, particularly for the neurodiverse student. Lifeskills are made fun of and successfully implemented. This learning journey is mapped to determine career paths, including future study, business development skills, if appropriate, and other one-on-one support and required experience. It is sometimes possible for the learner's project to be prepared to be presented as a project for sharing locally or globally in various communities. If the teenager wants to continue learning and earning from their passion project and duplicate it, ‘The Changemaker Way’ allows this.
